Atiku Abubakar and Reno Omokri kick against FG's decision to cancel WASSCE

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and former presidential media aide, Reno Omokri, have kicked against the Federal government's decision to cancel the West African Senior School Certificate Examination WASSCE for this year.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu had on Wednesday, July 8, announced that the Federal government will be rescinding its decision to reopen schools for graduating students to take part in the WASSCE examination scheduled for August 4 to September 5. Worried by the increasing number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in the country, Adamu said schools in Nigeria will only be opened when it is safe for students.

However, in a statement released today July 10, Atiku said canceling WASSCE examination puts Nigeria at more risk. He said the decision to cancel the examination which is not meant only for Nigerians, is not in the best interest of the country. His statement reads

''As a parent and investor in the education sector, I wish to register the fact that the Nigerian government’s policy of unilaterally cancelling the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, held annually by the West African Examinations Council, is not in Nigeria’s best interest.

At a time of the global COVID19 pandemic, it is understandable that an abundance of caution be put in place to save lives. However, caution, without consultation, and thoughtful action, may be counter productive.

1.5 million Nigerian youths write the West African Senior School Certificate Examination annually. To abruptly cancel this examination is to set back our nation’s youth, and place them behind their contemporaries in other West African nations. This is perilous, because Foreign Direct Investments and other economic indicators, are tied to the educational indexes of nations.

Already, Nigeria lags behind other African nations in crucial indices, like school enrolment, pass rates, and out of school children. This action, will further create chaos in the public education system and exacerbate an already bad situation.

Rather than cancellation, there are better ways to protect the health of Nigerians and prevent the pandemic from escalating. We could mobilise all available public and private infrastructures including primary schools, stadia, and cinemas, for the examinations. In the alternative, the Federal Government can prevail on WAEC to have a staggered examinations with a different set of questions for each shift. Doing so will allow WAEC Nigeria implement social distancing and achieve the goal of carrying out the examinations. A win-win scenario.

I urge this administration to take into account that the lives they are trying to save will be further put at risk, because if this policy is not reversed, tens of thousands, and possibly hundreds of thousands of Nigerians, will breach social distancing rules to cross over to neighbouring West African nations to write their WASSCE, rather than miss a year.''

Reno in his reaction said Nigeria's education system does not have the capacity to handle an overwhelming number of students who would be ready to take the examination next year. He wrote

'' 1.5 million Nigerians write WASSCE every year. Nigeria does not have the capacity to hold WAEC exams for 3 million people next year. What this means is that, if this policy is not reversed, every Nigerian child will miss a year, not just the final year students.

Edo has 2,210,534 voters, while Ondo has 1,822,346. A total of 4,032,880. WAEC has 1.5 million registered students in Nigeria. WAEC exams takes 5 hours. Voting takes all day. So, what is the rationale for suspending WASSCE, yet go on with Edo and Ondo elections?

Ghana opened schools for final year students and confirmed that WAEC examinations will hold. Meanwhile, Nigeria suspended WAEC exams. That is because Ghana’s President, @NAkufoAddo is a graduate of @UniofOxford, and General @MBuhari has questionable WAEC status!''he tweeted

FBI kidnapped my client, the US had no authority to take him - Hushpuppi's lawyer says

Gal Pissetzky, lawyer to instagram celebrity Ramon Abbas a.k.a Hushpuppi has continued his social media defence of the alleged fraudster, claiming he was 'kidnapped' by the FBI as no legal documents were made for his arrest and no extradition treaty exists between the US and the UAE where Hushpuppi was residing.

Hushpuppi was arrested in june in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, by the Dubai Police and later handed over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States.

The FBI in affidavit alleged that the suspected Nigerian fraudster “conspired to launder funds stolen in a $14.7 million cyber-heist from a foreign financial institution.”

He was also accused of being involved in a fraudulent scheme which defrauded a New York-based law firm of approximately $922,800 through a combination of computer hacking and social engineering.

Hushpuppi, allegedly duped about 1,926,400 victims, and is facing charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering, among others in the US, facing a possible prison term of 20 years.

Hushpuppi's lawyer Pissetzky on Thursday July 9, in an interview with Forbes claimed Hushpuppi is “an entrepreneur” who made his money legitimately through “real estate” and “promoting brands”

Speaking with BBC on Friday July 10, Chicago based lawyer Pissetzky said the US had no authority to transport Hushpuppi from Dubai claiming the US Department of State and the FBI 'kidnapped' his client.

"In my opinion, the FBI and the government here acted illegally when they kidnapped him from Dubai without any legal process to do so," Mr Pissetzky told the BBC.

"There was no extradition, there were no legal steps taken, there were no court documents filed, it was simply a call to the FBI. He is not a citizen of the United States, the US had absolutely no authority to take him," his lawyer says.

Pissetzky refused to discuss how he was getting paid for legal fees and says the case could last several months, even longer than a year.

Runtown and Sudanese-Australian model, Adut Akech, 20, spark relationship rumours with loved-up videos

Nigerian singer, Runtown, 30, and South Sudanese-Australian fashion model, Adut Akech Bior, 20, have sparked relationship rumours.

The pair took to their respective Instagram accounts to share loved-up videos of them enjoying a stroll with the father of one seen planting a sweet kiss on the model.

This is unacceptable. Reopen churches now- CAN tells state governments yet to open churches

Reverend Samson Ayokunle, the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has described as ''unacceptable and unreasonable'' the continuous closure of worship centres by some state government.

Several state governments closed worship centers as part of measures to contain the spread of Coronavirus in their states. While some states have reopened and issued guidelines for worshippers to adhere to, some others like Lagos and Ogun state governments are yet to reopens worship centers.

In a statement released by his Special Assistant, (Media and Communications), Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, the CAN boss said it is unacceptable for these state governments to continue to lockdown churches.

“The President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), His Eminence, Rev Dr Samson ‘Supo Ayokunle, on behalf of the Association, has called on all State governments that are yet to reopen churches under their watches to do so now because the continued lockdown order on the places of worship is no longer acceptable and reasonably justified.

Despite the directive given by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 with regards to the re-opening of places of worship nationwide, some states like Lagos and Ogun are yet to allow worship places, especially churches, to be reopened. What sin have the places of worship committed?

With the sudden emergence of the coronavirus pandemic, the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at all levels, agreed with the government on the need to close down the places of worship, economy, schools and every other facet of life.

But with the reopening of the economy, especially the markets (both organized and the unorganized markets) along with the plan to reopen airports and schools, the closure of churches anywhere in the country is no longer tenable and acceptable. In what way are the opened and roadside markets more organized than the church which warranted their opening?

Is it not our members in the places of worship that do go to markets and other sectors opened? Why are they allowed to go to markets and disallowed from going to places of worship? Is it because the marketers cannot contact the virus in the markets and airports?

It is our opinion that while the government and other relevant stakeholders are working hard to get cure for the COVID-19 pandemic, the Church too has a role to play by seeking for divine solutions as well” the statement read in part

Government has declared war against the arts - Soyinka reacts to amended NBC code

Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka has reacted to the amended 6th broadcasting code by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) which has ignited a controversy in the last few weeks.

Soyinka described the amended code as an “economic sabotage” and also accused the government of declaring war on arts and its producers.

The Nobel Laureate who said he discovered some “potentially dangerous aspects” while reading excerpts from the newly proposed NBC broadcasting code, said the new code will place unfair burden on the sector and also restrict intellectual property rights.

He said in the statement;

“I think it is about time the government come out openly and admit that it has declared war against the Arts and its producers, instead of its present tactics of piecemeal attrition.

“Just when we were reeling from the action of the Ministry of Youth and Development in joining hands with book pirates by providing a free-loading portal for the works of Nigerian authors, among others, along comes a new regulatory hit against the cinema and video enterprise, and its operators.

“Let me quickly utilise the opening of this new flank to commend the Director-General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission for his prompt attention to the complaint by Nigerian authors.”

He added that some of the regulations restrict intellectual property rights with who they choose to work with.

Noting that the new code will place unfair burden on the sector, he, therefore, asked the government to desists from stifling the industry.

“And now it is the turn of a sister industry to be placed under siege! I have just read excerpts of the newly proposed NBC broadcasting code and become aware of some potentially dangerous aspects of the code. Whilst one concedes that some of the regulations are well-intentioned, I shudder to imagine unintended consequences such as backhanded censorship in the age of digital media.

“These restrict intellectual property rights and their scope of exploitation with whomsoever one chooses to collaborate. It is economic sabotage writ large, directed against thousands of practitioners. Regulatory? This is strangulatory in effect!

“Several practitioners’ voices have been raised in protest. For one such insider’s detailed and passionate exposition on the deleterious provisions of this Code, I shall draw particular attention of policymakers to Chris Ihidero’s Why Does the NBC Want to Kill Local Content in Nigeria?

“If I may invoke a contemporary tragic image to render graphically what Ihidero and others have pleaded on behalf of both creators and consumers of this artistic productivity:

“Let government kindly take its knee off the neck of this industry. Please – let it breathe!”

Remains of one of 43 students who went missing in Mexico more than five years ago identified

Authorities in Mexico have identified the remains of one of 43 students who disappeared in Ayotzinapa, Mexico, more than five years ago without no trace.

The identification of one of the bodies, known as Christian Alfonso Rodríguez Telumbre on Tuesday July 7, was done with the help of DNA testing and is a major breakthrough in the case which has left Mexicans dumbfounded, Mexican authorities have announced.

On September 26, 2014, 43 students from a teacher's college in Guerrero state suddenly disappeared and investigations by the former Mexican administration of Enrique Peña Nieto concluded they were captured by police and handed over to the criminal group Guerreros Unidos.

According to the investigation, their bodies were burned in a landfill and then thrown into a river in the municipality of Cocula -- a theory that was termed, "the historical truth."

But an investigation carried out by forensic experts in Argentina contradicted that hypothesis, causing the entire disappearance of the students to be shrouded in mystery for years.

When Andrés Manuel López Obrador took over as president of Mexico, he vowed to find out the truth, and then created a commission which reopened the investigation and started from scratch.

According to Mexico's Attorney General's Office, the new discovery of the body comes from six pieces of remains which were sent to the laboratory at the University of Innsbruck in Vienna, Austria, where they were analyzed for months.

Contradicting the previous administration's investigation, the body evidence, they said, was not found in the landfill or the river, instead they were found about 800 meters from "where the historical truth is created," the attorney general's office said.

"Without a doubt this marks the beginning of the new route in the investigation that not only collapsed the so-called historical truth, but also generates the conditions for the indications, the evidence, the investigations carried out to clarify the events that unfortunately happened in Ayotzinapa," Mexico's undersecretary of Human Rights Alejandro Encinas said.

“We have broken the pact of impunity and silence that surrounded” the case, Mr. Omar Gómez Trejo, the special prosecutor assigned to the case said at a news conference.

He added, “today we tell the families and society that the right to the truth will prevail.”

Court of Appeal affirms Yahaya Bello as Kogi state governor

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed the election of Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello.

In a judgement delivered today July 4, the five-man panel of justices of the court upheld Governor Bello’s election, dismissing the appeals filed by four political parties challenging the governor’s re-election in the November 2019 governorship poll.

Those who filed the appeals were the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Action Peoples Party (APP), and the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP).

In its appeal, APP had claimed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) unlawfully excluded it from the governorship election in the state. While delivering judgment, Justice Mohammed Shuaibu dismissed the party's appeal. He also affirmed the decision of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which dismissed the petition filed by the APP and awarded a cost of N100,000 against the party.

The appellate court also dismissed the appeal filed by the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) challenging Governor Bello’s victory in the November 2019 governorship election.

The SDP candidate, Natasha Akpoti's appeal was dismissed on grounds that she could not prove the allegations of corruption and voter intimidation against the governor.

On his part, Mr. Musa Wada of the PDP was penalized by the court and his appeal was also dismissed. Wada was ordered to pay a sum of N100,000 each to Governor Bello, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and INEC, who were listed as respondents in the appeal.

INEC on November 18, 2019, declared Bello winner of the state governorship election. He polled a total of 406,222 votes to beat his closest rival, Wada who scored 189,704 votes and Akpoti who garnered a total of 9,482 votes.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, distances self from Hushpuppi

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has denied having any links with arrested suspected fraudster, Hushpuppi.

Earlier today, the ruling party, APC released a statement in which it urged the EFCC and other security agencies to investigate the links between Hushpuppi and some PDP chieftains. The party in its statement said Hushpuppi has been photographed with Atiku and some other PDP stalwarts like Bukola Saraki, Dino Melaye, and Yakubu Dogara and so they should be investigated to determine if they have any link with Hushpuppi.

Reacting to the statement by APC, Paul Ibe, media aide to the former Vice President, said the photo of Atiku and Hushpuppi making the rounds was a mere photo-op and not at any meeting as is being speculated.

Read the statement from Ibe below

''It is curious that the All Progressives Congress is mischievously trying to link Atiku Abubakar to the alleged fraudster, Ramon Abbas, AKA Hushpuppi, simply because he was photographed with Atiku at an event where many Nigerians had gathered.

For the avoidance of doubt, it was a mere photo-op and not at any meeting as being ingloriously speculated. We would advise the APC and Mr. Nabena to be very mindful of such senseless statements in the future especially as the case under reference is a subject of litigation in another country.

Had they been more sensitive, they would have come to terms with the reality that the case is a national embarrassment - not something to cheer about for any political blackmail.''

President Buhari applauds Nigerian man who found a wallet loaded with cash in Japan and returned it

President Buhari has applauded a Nigerian man, Ikenna Nweke, who found a wallet loaded with cash on the streets of Japan and returned it to the authorities.

Ikenna, who is a PhD student at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, and also a teaching assistant in the same university, said he was on his way home when he found the wallet.

''On the 19th of June, 2020, as I was coming home at about 7pm, I wanted to buy kebab for my wife, when I approached the shop in the centre I saw a purse and I picked it up. When I opened it, it contained [a] huge sum of money, queen’s cards and other valuables. I was sure that the owner was looking for the money, I was sure the owner was heartbroken then I took the money to the police station.

On getting to the police station, the police officer asked why I did not take the money, I told him that I was raised by a decent family and that my faith as a Christian forbade me from taking anything. Then I handed over everything to him and he took my information and everything about me and then told me about my rights as somebody who has found something that was missing.

He told me that I was entitled to 10 percent of the money and that if the owner of the money does not come to pick the money after three months, that the whole money will be mine.

Both offers were rejected by me. I rejected those officers because I am a Christian, I rejected those officers because I was raised by a very decent family. I rejected those officers because I’m a Nigerian.

Here is a message for every Nigerian that should maintain, protect the image of our nation wherever we are. Especially those in diaspora, we are the Nigerian people know. When we do something bad abroad it reflects on the image of the nation.

This is a message for non-Nigerians who think that every Nigerian is a criminal. That is not true. Nigeria is a country of about 200 million people. Two hundred million wonderful people.

There are some criminal elements in Nigeria, I must admit, and these criminal elements are found in every part of the world. These criminal elements are just a tiny fraction, they do not represent who we are, they do not speak for us. They are not a true reflection of who Nigerians are.”Nweke said

In a statement released today July 4 by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, President Buhari applauded Nweke for projecting the values of honesty, integrity, and contentment. The statement reads

''President Muhammadu Buhari sends warm greetings and commendation to a Nigerian doctorate student in University of Tsukuba, Japan, Mr Ikenna Nweke, who returned a missing wallet with huge sums of money to the police, and also turned down offer of a percentage by the authorities.

President Buhari salutes Nweke for projecting the values of honesty, integrity and contentment that should be the hallmark of a people, noting that good virtues and propriety are the hallmark of every culture in Nigeria, while crimes and criminalities are exceptions.

The President believes Nweke’s behaviour, coming at a period that the country needs a positive spotlight and close-up on its real values, clearly signposts what should hold the nation together, inspired by solid foundations laid by most families, religious bodies and communities for success in life.

President Buhari wishes Nweke all the best in his studies and work as a teaching assistant in same university, urging all Nigerians, home and abroad, to keep celebrating the age-old, irreplaceable attributes of honesty and decorum, and shun the microwaved, get-rich-quick tendencies that bring individual and collective shame.''

Last November, during a speech at the Fast Company Innovation Festival, he announced again he would be running in 2024. When the audience laughed at his announcement, West replied, “What y’all laughing at? We would create so many jobs! I’m not going to run, I’m going to walk.”

Flight attendant, 21, left with lips that resembled a "baboon's bottom" after botched lip filler treatment (photos)

A flight attendant has disclosed how a botched lip filler treatment left her with swollen lips that looked like she had "baboon bottom" lips.

Olivia McCann, 21, from Chorley, Lancashire, revealed how her lips were massaged so hard during a dissolving procedure that they grew to triple their size and "looked like they were about to pop."

The beautician reportedly assured her that swelling was normal, but Olivia was so horrified with the result that she hid at home for four days and declined her boyfriend's video calls.

In 2019, Olivia had a successful lip filler at another salon. She then decided to try a different filler elsewhere and was told she would need to have residual product dissolved first. It was during this £100 procedure, in March 2020, that her lips were injected with dissolver and vigorously massaged. This made her lips expand.

Due to how her lips looked after the treatment, Olivia wore sunglasses to avoid people recognising her and was forced to miss two days of work.

It isn't the first time Olivia has had filler-related disasters. She has had several other experiences at different salons over two years including swelling, lumpiness and uneven distribution of filler.

Now Olivia is sharing pictures of her latest ordeal to inspire others to do proper research before having invasive cosmetic treatments after lockdown.

Her lips later returned to their normal size but the experience has not put her off cosmetic surgery. She said she would still go under the needle again.

Watford sell Pape Gueye to Marseille just 17 hours after joining them following a controversial comment he made

Watford have sold Pape Gueye to Marseille just 17 hours after he joined them following a controversial comment he made.

Back in April, the Premier League club agreed a five-year deal for the 21-year-old French midfielder understood to be worth in the region of £45,000 a month. He was photographed holding a Watford shirt after putting pen to paper in the pre-contract agreement.

Gueye was due to officially join Watford on Wednesday, July 1, as a free agent and had been registered as their player. But he changed his mind saying he was 'badly advised' to sign for the club.

Following his controversial comment, Watford held talks with Marseille regarding a move for Pape Gueye just 17 hours after they had finalised his arrival.

The Ligue 1 side have now announced the signing of the 21-year-old midfielder on a 4-year contract.

Court dismisses suit against Oshiomhole

A lawsuit filed against the immediate past Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole and three others have been dismissed by a Federal High Court (FCT) sitting in Jabi, Abuja.

The lawsuit which was filed by Comrade Mustapha Salihu and five others, was the one that led to an order being granted by same court to effect the suspension of Oshiomhole from further acting as chairman of the APC.

The Plaintiffs' lawyer, Oluwola Afolabi who moved a motion to withdraw the case on Thursday July 2, said it was in line with the directive of the leaders of the APC that all court cases be discontinued in the interest of peace.

Oshiomhole's lawyer Ginika Ezeoke who did not oppose the plantiffs' desire to withdraw the case, urged the court to dismiss the suit on the grounds that the parties have filed pleadings and have be enjoined issues in relation to the subject of the case.

Justice Danlami Senchi who ruled on the case, dismissed the suit and ordered the parties involved to bear their respective costs.

An appeals court judge in New York has lifted a temporary ban on the publication of a potentially explosive “tell-all” book by President Donald Trump’s niece.

The ruling issued Wednesday, July 1, allows publisher Simon & Schuster to print and distribute the 240-page book by Mary Trump.

In the book, Mary dubbed her uncle Donald Trump “the world’s most dangerous man.”

Donald Trump's brother, Robert Trump, had asked for the restraining order, arguing that Mary was violating a non-disclosure agreement signed in 2001 after the settlement over the estate of Fred Trump — the father of Donald Trump, Robert Trump, and Fred Trump Jr. (Mary Trump's father).

Judge Alan Scheinkman postponed addressing whether the author had violated the non-disclosure agreement preventing her from revealing family secrets by writing the book, titled "Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man."

Nevertheless, Simon & Schuster “is not a party to the agreement,” so the block of their publication of the book “is vacated,” he ruled.

Reacting to the ruling, Mary Trump’s attorney Ted Boutrous said in a statement that the lifting of the prior restraint against the publisher was “very good news.”

“We look forward to filing our brief tomorrow (Thursday) in the trial court explaining why the same result is required as to Ms. Trump, based on the First Amendment and basic contract law,” he said.

Mary Trump’s legal team said they were hoping for a July 10 hearing.

In the book, Mary, a clinical psychologist, recounts what she witnessed of the “toxic family” in the home of her grandparents, according to her publisher.

The Daily Beast reported earlier that the book will reveal that Mary Trump was the crucial source for explosive New York Times reporting on Trump’s finances, which suggested the billionaire paid little in tax for decades.

"What is happening to Christians and churches qualifies fully as persecution''- Rev Chris Oyakhilome (video)

Reverend Chris Oyakhilome, senior pastor of Christ Embassy, has once again kicked against the COVID-19 guidelines issued by the government for religious gatherings. Speaking during a live sermon on Wednesday, July 1, the clergyman said what is happening to churches with regards to the guidelines qualifies fully as persecution.

In his words

''What is happening to Christians and Churches qualifies fully as persecution because in many countries, many states and many cities, people are allowed to go to the shops, market places, crowded places for hours without wearing a mask. Nobody cares about social distancing...and yet we have those who have the audacity and the foolishness to go into churches and say they are monitoring churches because the virus only attacks people who go to church''

He said the regulation is just for a certain time as the Church would not tolerate it for too long.

Twitter removes meme posted by Donald Trump for violating its copyright policy

Social media company, Twitter has continued its crackdown on Donald Trump's account by removing a meme tweeted by the US president on Tuesday, after the New York Times filed a copyright complaint over the use of the photo.

Trump posted an image of himself on Tuesday but by Thursday morning the photo had been taken down.

The photo was taken by NYT photographer Damon Winter for a feature on the then-presidential candidate in 2015. The black and white picture showed a smirking Trump sitting down while pointing at the camera, but was edited into a meme with bold white text saying: 'In reality, they're not after me they're after you. I'm just in the way.'

By Thursday, the photo had disappeared from the president's account and the tweet instead showed a 'media not displayed' notice.

Twitter has now confirmed removing the meme saying it violated copyright policies after the New York Times filed a 'takedown notice' on Wednesday under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

'This image has been removed in response to a report from the copyright holder,' Twitter said ..

'Per our copyright policy, we respond to valid copyright complaints sent to us by a copyright owner or their authorized representatives,' the company said.

The move marks the second time in two weeks that Twitter has cracked down on Trump's account, having previously flagged a video tweeted by the president as 'manipulated media.'

In May, Twitter began placing fact-check warnings on tweets from Trump's own account after he called mail-in ballots 'fraudulent', predicted problems with the November elections, and reacted to the killing of black American man George Floyd by a White Policeman in May.

On May 28, Trump signed an executive order that ends legal protections for social media firms, which he has accused of political bias.

The order opens Twitter, Facebook and Google up to lawsuits by diluting the legal protection which stops them from being liable for posts on their platforms.

Attack at Federal Medical Center was carried out by relatives of patients- Kogi state government

The Kogi state government says the attack at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) today Wednesday, July 1, was by relatives of patients abandoned by the staff of the hospital.

LIB had earlier reported that unknown gunmen stormed the health facility, carted away vital documents as well as phones and laptops of staff and patients in the hospital. The gunmen also disrupted a COVID-19 press conference earlier scheduled by the management of the hospital.

In a statement released this afternoon, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, said the attack was by protesting family members of patients in the hospital. His statement reads

“The attention of the Kogi State Government has been drawn to the unfortunate scuffle between the Staff of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja and some patients' relatives at the hospital, this morning.

Preliminary findings revealed that the violence ensued when relations of patients in the medical facility protested against the failure of the management of the hospital to attend to them. Many people in the emergency ward were left unattended to and a mother delivered at the gate of the hospital. That generated a lot of public tension in the state.

Tension started building since yesterday when patients and their relatives learnt of a plan by the medical staff to stage a protest today, seeking protection from COVID-19. We urge the people of the state to remain calm as government will ensure maintenance of law and order.

We also sue for calm and urge medical authorities to remain committed to their medical profession and responsibilities as Government will protect them in order to give them the confidence to deliver. Healthcare management must never be politicized. Also, government will carry out further investigations to ascertain the remote causes of the breach of peace by the protesters and also address their fears.”
